Skip’s run Cambridge 5-25-24
Not our best run, sloppy at times (that’s on me), but overall pretty happy with Skip.

The bucket game with Skip he has Pannus and has to have ointment put directly onto his eyeballs every day. (Panis is an autoimmune disease that causes permanent blindness if not treated. Eeeps.) So much harder than just eye drops, but thanks to Chirag Patel's bucket game, it's easy. Note the leg lift! He is inviting me to rub his belly, so he gets two reinforcements for being so cooperative. I ...
Skip’s first trial run of 2024

This is at Agility at the Farm, outside of St. Charles, Illinois. Great small, casual trial. Check out my blog, coming April 8th, for comments about where Skip is awesome, and where he could get himself into trouble.
Working on driving with Skip
Переглядів 8876 місяців тому
Practicing driving with Skip 12/15/23, working the sheep against a fence, right and left. Usually he "cheats" to the left when he's driving (probably because of his recently diagnosed vestibular deficit), but this time he didn't. I suspect the fence helped keep him from drifting to the left when going left to right, but also, hey: The "McConnell Method!" (Which is when a behavior problem goes a...
Skip turning 3/4 way left when called to come, not to the right.

Illustrating why I had Skip tested for unilateral deafness because he always turns to the left, no matter how short to distance to the right. (Spoiler alert! Read the blog post for 11/20/23 to see why he does that. (He's not deaf in one ear, it's something else!)

The McConnell Method

Want a behavior to stop? Just get out your camera, phone, or other recording device, make sure it’s charged up, and hit “record.” I can’t count the number of times I’ve tried to record a behavior and have it cease, but ONLY if it’s charged, the lens isn’t blocked, etc. In this video, Skip and visitor Bliss had been playing hard when I finally got it together to put my phone on video. Then, of c...
Feeding skinny ewe grain while Skip keeps his eye on the others.
Переглядів 28010 місяців тому
Normally you'd never be able to feed one ewe corn without getting run over by the others; but between Skip using his Border Collie eye, and me occasionally tickling the noses of the other ewes, I can easily feed "Skinny ewe, aka Twiggy," without separating her out. Much less stress for everyone. (I still don't know what is wrong with Twiggy she's been wormed twice with 2 different kinds of worm...
Calling Maggie away from birdseed, instant compliance not necessary.
Переглядів 1,2 тис.10 місяців тому
As I talk about in this week's blog post, www.patriciamcconnell.com/theotherendoftheleash, some cues need to be complied with instantly (like "stand") but others don't need to be so black and white. Maggie does much better if I call her away from munching on bird seed by giving her a bit of time to respond.
“Stand” cue-important for the dogs to do right away.
Переглядів 1,5 тис.10 місяців тому
This is an example of a cue that the dogs need to comply with immediately. I use it when they are working sheep and must stop right away, or when I need to to stop on a walk, for example, if walking somewhere off the farm. It's not hard to teach, and easily reinforced with play. See the video of Calling Maggie off of birdseed, to see a different kind of cue, one where she needs to comply but no...

Awesome training, amazing dogs ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
After a long day of work, my recommended was blessed with this. Thank you Patricia! Hope you and the lovely dogs are doing well!
You are so welcome!
😍
What a good boy! 🙂
Lovely!
It’s good to see you. I watched your show in animal planet in the 90s, took your class on human animal relationships at UW, wanted to be an animal behaviorist but switched gears to human behavior. ❤❤❤❤. Sitting on my porch with my 4 dogs right now. 😊
Great to hear from you, love thinking about the joy of teaching that class!
so nice panis?
Yes, you nailed it! So far, well controlled, whew!
@@PatriciaMcConnell my last dog had that it’s kind of like a steroid I assume
@@PatriciaMcConnell you taught him really good to lay down and accept it. I almost had to wrestle my boy
We’ve been saying “All done” and using the sign language signal for it, then turning our heads away.
Great example

Hello, I am in Colorado and struggling with some puppy mill rescues. I was wondering if you could advise me or know of any behaviorist in Colorado who you would recommend. Since it is UA-cam, I guess I will check back here if you respond. Thank you!
No, sorry, I wish I knew someone, and sorry it took me forever to find this.Don't check often enough!
My old dog was a treat bandit. "Give me more or I'm going to eat you for lunch!"
I love ❤️ these dogs they are so smart I've yet to meet a rancher without them 😊
He's not an ambi-turner.
...AND BEST.. TRAINER... EVER
BEST DOG EVER!!!

It’s a good technique. What also works is mace or a Glock…

Let compassion be your compus blessings 🙌 😊
I’ve just read the part in your book where you talked about trying to teach them to release one by one. I hoped I could find a video of it😂
Typical! Lol😂

What a great dog! 😮👍👍👍
Maggie ❤
WOW! 👍
Acabo de llegir el teu llibre en espanyol... i'm end of reading your book in spanish, i'm from Barcelona, is wonderful!
I’ve just been told my 4 year old border collie Buddy is going blind. He’s a rescue. I don’t even know where to start with this.
Is this for a book ?
What well behaved dogs they are.
I love her expression too🥰
Positive-only and force free is a lie and marketing scam.
really good example of this sort of behaviour, good that you can see the lip curl too- all too often people write off whale eyes and lip licking so its good to see them in combo with more recognised fear expression
Did you mean to post this publicly?
This is way adorable. Looks more like teamwork play! My dogs would had played rough and away with the toy!
@Patricia McConnell Have you ever worked with an autistic dog? behavior issues
...just doinf their "dog-thing"
adorable dogs <3 <3
I would like to take herding lessons with my next dog, and some handlers have advised me to get a trained dog so that I don't have to learn both training and handling at once. Even though I will be working with a trainer at the lessons, they still think it's too hard for a beginner to train their first dog. I wondered what you might think about that Dr McConnell. I don't think I'll be doing high level trialing, I just wanted to try herding and have something interesting to do with my dog. Of course it would be fun if he were already trained, but maybe that's just not necessary for my rather low key ambitions?
Do Not Watch it.... it is setting up 2 dogs to be hurt needlessly. Dogs need a human handler to PREVENT fights, not post youtube vids for people who are ignorant to speculate about. Report the video!
So I'm watching this video and I go boy is that Patricia McConnell? Lol I guess so dang I didn't know that she was all this much respect much respect Patricia
Was it the head pats or the folded arms?
❤❤
Impressive
😁
I read that as Steve Martin: "Dogs and cats, living together!" My cat does that same maneuver of pulling herself along the carpet when she wants belly rubs. First cat I've ever had who liked belly rubs!
